AudiobookConverter

MP3 to M4B

Install AudiobookConverter

Install AudioBookConverter from Steam. Using Steam will guarantee you are using safe, latest and genuine version of product.

Launch AudiobookConverter

Launch AudiobookConverter. By default you will see Queue tab where conversion jobs will be displayed. Application is ready for conversion.

Add files to AudiobookConverter

Use add button to add ether directory containing source files or source file. Depending on your book size and on your drive speed this may take several seconds to display all files.

Important note: at this moment application starts to scan source file to load meta-information: tags, codecs, duration, bitrate, etc. to prepare you for next steps. So, if you system is not very powerful and you added quite a lot files you may see system is not very responsive.

When AudiobookConverter loads tags from source files it will populate fields at the bottom of the screen. Now it's time to input correct audiobook information or keep it as it. Note: correct book information is important when importing to iTunes or Books application as they heavily relay on tags.

You can right-click on the file and move it up or down if file is not ordered correctly, or even remove a file if you don't need it.

(Optional) Create Chapters

(This step is optional if you only need to convert mp3s to audiobook and not interested in other details you can skip it completely.)

Press Chapter button and application will create a chapter from each mp3 file you added. If you happy with default chapters split you may move one.

(Optional) Combining Chapters

(This step is optional if you only need to convert mp3s to audiobook and not interested in other details you can skip it completely.)

Sometimes one real chapter could be split in several mp3 files, so as a result you will get several chapters which you need to combine. You need select those chapter and use right-click to get a menu to combine them.

(Optional) Splitting Chapters

If you combined chapters by mistake and you should be able to split them back. (broken now)

(Optional) Moving/Removing Chapters

(This step is optional if you only need to convert mp3s to audiobook and not interested in other details you can skip it completely.)

If for some reason chapters order is not right (this is common issue for first and last chapter, if they were given different names) and need to re-order them - use right-click to get menu and move chapters up or down.

If you want to remove some chapters, likes intro, just use right-click "Remove" and chapter will be removed from output audiobook. You can remove chapter anywhere from the book.

(Optional) Splitting book into parts

(This step is optional if you only need to convert mp3s to audiobook and not interested in other details you can skip it completely.)

If you would like to have several output files and split book into parts, use "split to new part" menu this will create new part (and new output file) from the chapter you selected.

You should be able to combine them back if you changed your mind (broken now)

(Optional) Managing ArtWork

(This step is optional if you only need to convert mp3s to audiobook and not interested in other details you can skip it completely.)

AudiobookConverter loads all images from ALL source files and up to 10 images from ALL directories and sub-directories where source files are located. AudiobookConverter will try to remove duplicates.

You can remove artwork which you don't need as most of players could show only one anyway.

You can add artwork from local disc or just paste picture which you copied somewhere.

There is an idea to allow different artwork to different parts of the book, as this could be useful to book series, but this is not implemented yet. To workaround this you can add all artworks to all parts and then set primary picture manually in iTunes.

(Optional) Managing output quality

You can select output file format or quality settings or choose one of the pre-defined presets.

AudiobookConvert will try to detect bitrate of original files and set same bitrate for output files. This will allow you to have output files of comparable size with source files. However, if you converting from mp3 to m4b or ogg you may go with lower bitrate for m4b and even much lower bitrate for ogg without any visible loss of quality.

Presets are preconfigured with some settings, but if you change settings of preset this will override preset with you selection. You can create your own presets for your needs.

Formats: m4b most popular audiobook format, m4a is the same but mostly used for music files, mp3 - you can use it when solving opposite task, ogg (encoded with opus) - most advanced (best quality for the same size) codec which is supported by most recent Androids, but iOS uses may need to do extra efforts to use it.

Split by Parts/Chapter - selecting Parts will create output file for each part, selecting chapters will create file per chapter this is mostly used with combination of format: mp3/m4a if you breaking existing audiobook into smaller chapter files.

Speed: This will re-encode resulting book with different resulting speed, so you don't need to set speed in your player, this higher speed will reduce file size if sampling frequency is the same.

Cut-off: this will cut off frequencies higher then selected thresholds if book contains only voice you could go to quite lower number to save on bitrate.

Force re-encoding: Auto - AudibookConverter will re-encode source files only if output codec is different, so re-encoding to same codec is bypassed and remuxing is very fast. however, if you want convert m4b to m4b and you want to change bitrate you need to use "Always" option.

Converting

After pressing start button AudiobookConvert will put every Part of the book you created into queue and start converting them in the parallel. Also AudiobookConverter will convert each chapter in parallel optimising order of conversation for speed. So, the more cpu cores you have the more parallel conversions happens simultaneously. AudiobookConverter will limit amount of parallel threads with number of detected cpu cores, so, you normally should see 100% cpu utilisation if your hard drive is fast enough. You may notice that your system became less responsive.

You can pause any conversation job in the queue, please not pausing will not be immediate as AudiobookConverter will complete conversion of chapters in flight, so it could several seconds delay.

You can stop any conversion job, which means conversion will be cancelled and you will need to reconfigure the job from start if you want to start again.
